Well I have seen and learned so many different things over the past 1.5 years since my last blog posting. My confidence is through the roof! So let's talk Northstar.
I have to commend GM for doing such an outstanding job of selling these cars. I have 25 years in the car business and can't ever remember seeing or hearing a Deville advertisement on the TV or radio. But here in the L.A./Orange County area there are tons of them. And I mean tons! And guess what, I would say that 80% of them will experience the head gasket issues between 75k - 160k miles. I strongly feel that 60% - 70% of these overheating cars will be sold, traded, crushed, or just parked in the yard because they are just too beautiful to give up on. Now 20% of those people will seek repair options. Repair options include a new engine (same thing will happen again), Remove and Replace with a used engine (same thing will happen again), Timesert, Bigsert, or Normsert repair options (one time repairs that fail), and stud repairs.
Now everything that I am saying is based solely on my experience from working on the Northstar engine. I will never bash GM but they will never put out verifiable information concerning their products, especially if it's negative. Why would they?
Once this engine becomes a SuperStar, it is my opinion one on the best combustible engines ever made.....ever! Most of my customers experienced true low-cost of ownership until they started having overheating issues. I have a friend that has over 300k miles on his El Dorado and has never even replaced the plugs!!! That definitely doesn't happen for most. So for our price, why not keep your car? We have the experience here to make the expensive hotshots look like car repair quacks.
I have receipts from shops (I will post them) that charged one of my customers $6,000 to do the lower crankcase reseal. And 2 months later the same customer started having the overheating problem. Well the shop wanted another $6,000 to install TIMESERTS! He brought his car to me and was crushed after he saw the quality of the work and he knew that I could have saved him $5500.
Another customer was charged $1100 just to install an alternator. Then the same shop wanted another $4000 just to do valve cover gaskets, cross-over gaskets, water pump, and a few other things that they made sound other-worldly. I would send my car to the crusher too if I didn't know any better.
Fact is, if you replace your water pump, radiator, thermostat, coolant temp switch, and coolant reservoir, in many shops you would have exceeded the cost of our Superstar Stud System and would still have overheating issues! It's hard for people to trust us after that happens.
to be continued.....
